Moving cost guide

How much do movers cost in Manhattan?

Manhattan moves are priced by volume, not by the hour. The table below shows typical totals by apartment size at the standard date rate, computed by the same engine as our instant calculator.

What actually makes Manhattan expensive is rarely the distance, it is building logistics: elevator reservations, COI paperwork, and fifth-floor walk-ups in prewar buildings. All of it is asked about and priced upfront.

What changes the price

Elevator buildings run on paperwork

Most doorman buildings require a Certificate of Insurance naming the building, and many only allow moves in a reserved freight elevator window, typically weekdays 9 to 5. The COI is free from any legitimate mover, but the elevator slot is the thing to book early, because buildings give them out first come first served.

Prewar walk-ups add up fast

A fourth-floor walk-up in the East Village means three flights of stair charges on every cubic foot moved. For small apartments high up, stairs can be the biggest line on the bill after the move itself, which is why the calculator asks your exact floor.

Date matters

The first two and last four days of every month are the busiest and price highest. Mid-month days around the 15th run slightly above standard. The calendar in the calculator shows every date color-coded before you pick, and the table below uses the standard rate.

The 10% administration fee is shown, not hidden

Every estimate includes a 10% administration fee as its own line. Most movers fold fees like this into a number you only see on moving day. Here it is in the breakdown before you ever share your contact info.

Common questions

How much does it cost to move a studio in Manhattan?

A typical studio at about 250 cubic feet prices in the low $400s with elevator access on a standard date, fully itemized. Walk-up floors add per-flight charges.

What is a COI and do I need one?

A Certificate of Insurance proves your mover carries liability coverage. Most Manhattan elevator buildings require one before the crew may enter. Legitimate movers issue them free, usually within a day.

Can I get a real price without calling anyone?

Yes. That is the whole point of this site: itemize your move online and see every fee before you share any contact info.
